St. Mary’s Center For Women and Children
Since it’s inception in 1981, Dec-Tam has been involved in philanthropic causes. Through charitable giving, community outreach programs and donations of time and material, Dec-Tam supports programs that provide important services within the communities we serve. So, when we were asked by the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts to participate in a “Day of Service” and combine efforts with 54 other contractors to improve the Dorchester campus of St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children, we jumped at the chance. The center, located at the former St. Margaret’s Hospital, offers innovative and family-centered programs for women and children who have experienced trauma and are living in poverty. The project’s total value, estimated at more than $200,000, brought substantial improvement to the facility enhancing seven of the agency’s residential, education, and employment programs.
Projects within the center included building a sensory room, repairs to the roof, façade of the east wing and flooring in the administrative offices. Before the actual construction and renovations could begin, Dec-Tam needed to mobilize a crew of four to pre-clean the area and remove all debris. The area was then prepped for containment and negative air established. Approximately 250 linear feet of deteriorating AC pipe insulation and 100 square feet of tank insulation was removed to allow for new and updated plumbing. Air quality testing and clearance was generously provided by ECM Environmental Consulting and Management, Inc.
St. Mary’s Center President Deirdre Houtmeyers recognizes the value and impact of the day of service. “This is a tremendous gift to St. Mary’s Center, a place which hundreds of families call home each year. To replicate a project of this magnitude on our own would take at least a year of planning and fundraising. Thanks to the AGC, we can allocate more resources to the programs and services benefiting our families.”
