BANG, BANG, IT’S LEAD
During the summer of 2014 Dec-Tam was responsible for the lead decontamination of the Town of Norwell’s indoor firing range housed in the basement of the town’s former police department. Indoor shooting ranges have an extremely high level of lead dust in the sand and surrounding surfaces and can cause serious health problems if not disposed of properly. The police department had relocated their headquarters leaving the old building to be put up for sale. Decontamination of all potentially harmful lead containing materials had to be completed prior to listing the property for sale. Dec-Tam’s highly skilled team set to work by first identifying contaminated areas which, in addition to the firing range itself, included the adjacent hallways, storage areas and gymnasium. Once affected areas were identified our team began by removing and disposing of contaminated sand in the firing range. Lead particles from bullets settle into sand, often unseen, and pose a threat to people as they can be inhaled or even ingested simply by touching an affected surface. Next, our crew sprayed down and deep cleaned the range and other areas using a de-leading solution designed to remove heavy metals from hard surfaces. All dust, debris and rinseates were collected, containerized and disposed of as hazardous materials. Upon completion of the lead abatement, a visual inspection and dust wipe sampling was performed to insure lead levels were within acceptable and legal limits. Dec-Tam was able to provide the Town of Norwell with a turn-key solution that restored their property to pre-firing range condition thus making it “For Sale” ready. Dec-Tam completed the project on time and within budget.« Back to Case Studies
