SELECTIVE DEMOLITION & ABATEMENT AT EPA SITE

SELECTIVE DEMOLITION & ABATEMENT AT EPA SITE

The former Mohawk Tannery operated on about 15 acres on the Nashua River in New Hampshire. Between 1924 and 1984 they tanned hides for leather and since then it has been inactive. The EPA was addressing the site because of past disposal practices which included direct discharge of wastewater into the river and the disposal of sludge into unlined disposal areas. In 2000, the EPA and the City of Nashua started to address the various hazards on the site.

The spring of 2012 Dec-Tam was hired to perform the decontamination and disposal of asbestos materials. Dec-Tam performed the following:

Abated approximately 700 cubic yards of asbestos contaminated debris located throughout the site

  • Removed and disposed of the old drying oven which contained approximately 2250 square feet of asbestos transite wall panels.
  • Removed and disposed of approximately 1200 sq ft of asphalt roof shingles, 50 gaskets, and 25 linear feet of pipe insulation.

We preformed these tasks within a regulated asbestos work area that contained:

  • A remote three chamber decontamination facility
  • Personal Protection Equipment
  • Truck wash station
  • Lined Dumpsters.

At the conclusion of the project the City of Nashua received a closeout package consisting of an air monitoring report, disposal manifest sheets and the asbestos abatement notifications and all other appropriate documentation. Now that the asbestos remediation has been completed, the City of Nashua shall proceed with the demolition of the remaining structures at the site.
